Umamlambo.

Umamlambo (WO-mam-LAMB-oo)

The umamlambo is perhaps the most significant and powerful familiar that an African VAMPIRIC WITCH can hope to have, especially among the Xhosa people who live in southeast Africa (see AFRICAN VAMPIRE WITCH, LIVING VAMPIRE, and TIKOLOSHE). There is a saying among them, “witchcraft goes through the breasts”, and in the spirit of this tradition the umamlambo is often passed down through a family line. Fortunately, the umamlambo is considerably adaptable, for if it is passed from a female witch as an inheritance to a male witch, the umamlambo will assume the form of a woman. Then, it will work its way into his life, eventually moving into his home. When they marry, the witch’s father will immediately begin to die, but the witch will become wealthier and always have good luck.

The umamlambo, whose natural form is that of a snake, has the ability to shape- shift into any creature it desires. When not in the witch’s home, the umamlambo resides in its own underwater home where it is attended to by lizards. Its progeny is called ICHANTI.

Anyone who makes direct eye contact with the umamlambo will die unless he is immediately treated by an herbalist. This happens most often at the water’s edge when a person bends down to drink or collect water. To prevent meeting the umamlambo’s stare, it is advised to first throw a stone into the water as this will make the umamlambo blink and oftentimes withdraw.

Udug.

Udug (OO-dug)
Variations: Udu, Uttuku, Utuk

In ancient Mesopotamia and Sumer there was a vampiric spirit known as an udug. Created by the ancient gods to be used as a means of punishment against mankind for not properly burying their dead, the udug possessed the corpses and animated them. Once the udug was in the body, the animated corpse began to crave human blood and attacked of its own volition. Originally an udug was seen as neither good nor evil but as a tool that was utilized by the gods. It was later prayed to in the hopes that it would give assistance in the smiting of one’s enemies. Eventually, the udug evolved into a demonic being.

The idea of the gods creating a being to be used as a means to punish their people is not uncommon. The gods of ancient Egypt had SEKEHT.

Ubour.

Ubour (OO-bor)

In Bulgaria the ubour (“undead”) is a vampiric REVENANT that is created when a person dies a sudden and violent death and the spirit refuses or does not realize it needs to leave its body. After it has been buried for 40 days, the ubour digs itself free from its grave and begins its reign of terror as a vandal, smearing manure on the sides of a person’s home and breaking the dishes in his house. It has been speculated that the ubour does this because it is grief stricken and misses being with its family. It looks as it did in life, except that it has one nostril and creates sparks when it moves.

It is active only between noon and midnight and only when all other food sources and options have been exhausted will the ubour seek out a human to attack for his blood. It has a barb on the tip of its tongue that it uses to break a person’s skin. However, if the would-be victim has the opportunity, he can offer the ubour something eatable in exchange for his life, an opportunity the vampire will not pass by, no matter what the food may be, even if it is feces.

If an ubour must be destroyed, a trained vampire hunter called a VAMPIRDZHIJA must be employed, as he is able to detect an ubour while it is still unformed and in its grave and knows how to destroy it at each stage of its unlife. The most common method employed is BOTTLING.

Uahti (Wah-KE-chee)

In South America, all along the Amazon River and in the nearby jungle there lives a type of vampiric demon called uahti. It is a small and hairy creature with an enlarged penis, large belly, and toeless feet (see HAIR). Following behind a colony of bats, the uahti sexually assaults adolescent girls and adult men, draining away their sexual and life-energy during the assault (see ENERGY VAMPIRE).

Tü.

On the Polynesian islands there is a vampiric demon known as a tü (“war” or “to stand”). When a person wants the power to communicate with the dead, he eats a piece of the corpse belonging to the person he wishes to converse with. The spirit, the tü, that once resided in the body will return and appear to the person, seeking to start a friendship with him. As a show of good faith and wanting to make friends, the tü will offer to do favors for the person, such as attacking those who would do its potential new friend harm and drinking their blood.

Toyol.

Toyol (Toe-YALL)

A vampiric demon in Malaysian lore, the toyol (“elevated”) is created by magic and used by a witch to be her familiar. Taking the body of a deceased baby, the witch performs a ceremony that allows a demonic spirit to possess and animate the corpse, binding it to her to do her bidding. Looking like the GREEN-skinned baby with red eyes that it is, the toyol is usually kept in an earthenware jar called tempayan, which is stored under the witch’s home until it is needed, as the toyol is rather mischievous when left to its own devices. It is also something of an accomplished thief, but unless it is told to go and steal something, it only takes half of what is there.

Tomtin.

Tomtin (TOM-tin)

Vampiric fay from the folklore of Germany, the tomtin are described as small men dressed from head to toe in red. The tomtin were most likely a type of forest spirits that were the servants to the nearly forgotten fertility gods Nacht Ruprecht (“Night Rupert”) and Schwartz Peeter (“Black Peter”), who were once worshiped by the ancient Germanic tribes. Sadistic, even for a member of the Unseelie Court, at their master’s behest the tomtin would pounce upon travelers and beat them to death with chains or sticks. Then, as the corpses bled out, the tomtin would lap up the blood as it pooled on the ground. When they had finished eating, they would return to their masters carrying with them the hearts and livers of their murder victims.

Toci.

Toci (Toe-CHI)
Variations: Tlacuantesupe, Tonantzin

The Aztec people of ancient Mexico had in their pantheon a vampiric fertility goddess named Toci. She was particularly attentive to the corn crops. In the eleventh month of the Aztec calendar, Ozomatli, a woman who had been preselected would be ritually sacrificed and skinned. The hide was then donned by the temple priest at the high point of the ceremony. If Toci did not receive her sacrifice, there would be famine.
