The Xhosa people of Lesotho, Africa, tell of a vampiric bird called a hili. Large and skullheaded, it drips bile and fecal matter from its body as it flies. If so much as a single drop lands on a person, he will contract a disease so powerful that only the strongest magic can cure it. To keep the illness from spreading throughout the community, the infected person must be driven out. As the victim grows sicker and sicker, the hili returns to be near so that it may be the first animal on the scene when the person dies.
Hexe (HEX)
Variations: Gabelreiterinner (“pitchfork riders”), Tochter des Donners, Truten, Unholdinnen, Wettermacherinner, Wickhersen (“seer”), Zauberinnen (“magicians”)
In Germany, witches are oftentimes suspected of practicing acts of vampirism (see GERMAN VAMPIRES). The hexe, whose name means “witch”, can send her soul out from her body to meet with other witches on their Sabbaths. Once the hexe have gathered, these red-eyed witches shape-shift into various forms and summon ghosts. Hexe are most active on Saint George’s Day (April 23) when evil in all forms are most active. Although the hexe is a LIVING VAMPIRE, the preferred method for killing one is to burn her at the stake.
Hefnivargar is a type of vampiric activity. In Iceland it is customary to never let a baby sleep in the same room as an elderly person because they could unintentionally steal away the baby’s life-energy (see ALFEMOE and ENERGY VAMPIRE).

In the Philippines when an ASWANG decides that it no longer wishes to hunt for its human prey itself, it moves to the swampy regions of the country and becomes a hayopan. Physically, nothing has changed and the vampire is still an aswang in every way. The only thing that has changed, other than its new geographic location, is how it hunts. Still desirous of consuming human blood, the hayopan raises and trains a float of crocodiles to hunt and return with food for it.
Hawthorn (HAW-thorn)
Variations: Bread and Cheese Tree, Crataegus oxyacantha, Gaxels, Hagthorn, Ladies’ Meat, Mayblossom, Mayflower, Quickset, Sceach, Thorn-Apple, Tree of Chastity, White Hawthorn
With its short trunk, dense reddish leaves, thorned branches, and distinctive white blossoms, the hawthorn shrub is a native of Northern Europe. Its durable, hard, and heavy wood makes it a perfect and natural weapon to be used for the staking of vampires. Hawthorn is considered to be a sacred plant as it was said in the medieval period that not only was it the burning bush of Moses but also that it was used to make the crown of thorns for Christ. For these reasons hawthorn is the preferred wood used for funeral pyres as well, as its smoke carries the souls of the dead quickly to the afterlife.

Chevalier Ricaut, in his study of the Greek Church, was told a tale of a vampiric REVENANT by a monk named Sophrones. The monk was very well known in his parish, the Turkish town of Smyrna, and it is from there that the story of the Vampire of Milos originates. Although no year was given as to when the story was supposed to have unfolded, Dom Augustin Calmet included the story in his book titled Dissertation of Revenants, the Excommunicated, and the Ghosts of Vampires, which was published in 1751.
In the town of Smyrna, a man by the name of Harppe was excommunicated by the church. When he died, his body was interred in unhallowed ground. Shortly thereafter, Harppe rose to unlife as a vampire. The townfolks wanted to dispose of it in the traditional way — beheading and quartering the body followed by boiling the parts in wine. However, the parents of the REVENANT begged the local monks not to allow that to happen, at least until they had the chance to go to Constantinople themselves, where they hoped they would be able to obtain absolution for their son. The monks agreed, but erring on the side of caution, moved the vampire inside the church while it was at rest in its COFFIN. There, daily morning mass was said over it as well as the continuous prayers being said throughout the day that were offered up to Heaven toward the restoration of Harppe’s soul.
Originally a Malaysian vampiric demon, the hantu penyardin has spread to the Polynesian Islands. It looks like a dog-headed demon and lives in caves in and near the sea. The hantu penyardin feeds off human souls.

A vampiric demon from Malaysia, the hantu langsuir looks like a beautiful woman or as a floating woman’s head with a tail made of entrails and spinal column that hangs down from its severed neck. It is most difficult to keep this vampire from entering into a home, as it can squeeze through even the smallest opening or crack.
A picky eater, the hantu langsuir has a very specific order to the victims it preys on. Of all the sources of blood that a vampire can choose from, the hantu langsuir prefers the blood of a newborn male child. If none is available, then the blood of a newborn female will suffice. The entrails of either gender are consumed as well. When the hantu langsuir manages to find a suitable victim, it bites a tiny hole in his neck from which it draws the blood.
On occasion, it will drink milk from any available source and lick the blood off a sanitary napkin. If it does so, the woman to whom the pad belonged will start to grow weak as her life-energy is being mystically drained away.
Should the hantu langsuir be caught in the act of feeding, the head will detach from its body and fly off to safety as it shape- shifts into an owl, emitting an ear-piercing screech as it flees. Both parts of the vampire, the discarded body and the head, must be captured and burned to ash if the creature is ever to be destroyed.
There are some women who have the ability to see the hantu langsuir, as it is invisible during the day (See BRAHMAPARUSH).

Hantu Dodong (HAN-too Do-DONG)
Variations: Hántu Dondong, Hantu Dor Dong
The hantu dodong of India feeds off the blood of wild pigs as well as the blood of humans, like many vampires do. However, this vampire comes into existence in a rather unique way — the evils of humanity give it form and allow it to physically manifest. Once it has a form, when not living in its cave, it hunts for its prey.

Hant-Pare (HANT-PAR)
Variations: Han Parl, Hantu Pari, HANTU PENYARDIN
In Indian lore the hant-pare is a vampiric spirit that attacks people from the safety of its home on the astral plane (see ASTRAL VAMPIRE). Described as looking like a three-foot-long leech, it reaches into our dimension and, invisibly, attaches itself to an open wound on a person, draining away his blood.
