Haitian vampire lore tells us of a werewolf-vampire hybrid called jé rouge (“red eyed”). When an evil person dies, he can rise from the grave as a wolf that feeds only on human blood. The only known way to destroy this creature is to behead it using a new sexton’s spade. Once this is accomplishled, the head must be thrown into a river.

In Brazil there is a vampiric demon known as a jaracas. It assumes the form of a snake when it is time to feed, slithers up to a mother while she is asleep, and attachs itself to her breast, draining her breast milk. During the attack, the jaracas slips the end of its tail into the baby’s mouth to prevent it from crying and waking its mother. When it attacks a sleeping man, it will bite him in his upper arm, taking a survivable amount of blood. Victims will eventually begin to grow weaker as the attacks continue, and will never be able to fully recover until the jaracas has moved on to other prey. Mothers will discover that their milk has dried up.
A jaracas can only be driven off if one hopes to save its victims, as it cannot be destroyed. Catholic prayers to the saints work, as will the blessing of a Catholic priest. There are also several ancient and traditional incantations, spells, and talismans that can be purchased or made to ward it off.

The ancient Aztec people of Mexico worshiped a vampiric goddess of agriculture named Itzapapalotl (“Obsidian Knife Butterfly”). She could shape-shift into a butterfly and was described as being a beautiful winged woman with jaguar claws on her fingertips and carrying a stone knife in her hand, the symbol of her personification as the ritual knife. Although she was not as bloodthirsty as other gods in her pantheon, she was slain by Mixcoatl with an arrow and her body burned to ash.

In Bulgaria, when a child born on a Saturday dies before it can be baptized, it will rise from its grave nine days after its burial as a vampiric REVENANT known as an istral (“lost heart”). It attacks livestock, killing five or more a night, by drinking their blood. Only a VAMPIRDZHIJA (“vampire hunter”) can slay it.

In West Africa witches are known to disinter the bodies of those who have committed suicide (see AFRICAN VAMPIRE WITCH and VAMPIRIC WITCH). Through a magical ceremony, the witch cuts out the person’s tongue and embeds a wooden peg into his head, thus enslaving her construction, a zombielike REVENANT vampire known as an isithfuntela, into doing her bidding. It makes up for its lack of physical strength by having an array of abilities at its disposal, including shape-shifting into bats and rats and the power of hypnosis. Its most powerful ability is it can raise the dead and command them until the sun rises, after which the animated corpses will turn into dust.
The isithfuntela must feed off human blood to survive, but it is not strong enough to take a healthy person on its own. Rather, it uses its powers of hypnosis to make a person stand still while it drives a wooden peg into his brain, killing him. Then it feeds at its leisure from the corpse.
Wolves hate the isithfuntela and will rip it apart should a pack ever come across one. Otherwise, a stake driven through its heart or decapitation will destroy the construct.
Of all the vampiric beings, creations, and creatures, the invunche is perhaps the most pitiable. In Chile a witch will kidnap a firstborn male child while it is an infant and take it back to her cave, a place accessible only through an underground lake entrance. Once the baby is in her lair, the witch first breaks one of its legs and twists it over the baby’s back. The other leg, arms, hands, and feet are broken and disjointed and twisted into unnatural positions. A hole is cut under the right shoulder blade and then the right arm is inserted through it so that the arm will look as if it is growing off the child’s back. The baby’s head is gradually bent and shaped over time as well so that it will be misshapen. After the procedure is completed, the witch then rubs a magical ointment over the mangled infant, causing it to grow thick HAIR all over its body. Finally, its tongue is cut down the center so that it resembles a snake’s forked tongue. A baby no longer, the invunche is from then on fed a diet of human flesh, completing the transformation.
The creature is never able to leave the witch’s cave lair, as it does not have the physical capability of swimming due to the imposed deformities of its body, unless the witch chooses to use her magic to fly it out. Otherwise, its primary duty is to act as a guardian of her cave, killing all who enter it, unless they know the secret to entering the cave without violence — kissing it on its ass. The creature can emit a blood- curdling scream, a talent it gained in lieu of the ability to speak. The sound is enough to freeze a man with fear, permanently.
The invunche has control over a lesser being, a trelquehuecuve. The invunche uses it to lure young girls to the water, abduct them, and bring them back to him so that it can then drain them dry of their blood. Only a hero can kill a trelquehuecuve and an invunche.
In Russian the word inovercy means “nonbeliever”, as in someone who is not a practicing member of the Russian Orthodox faith. Already ostracized by the community, when this person dies, he may rise up as an undead creature, typically a vampiric REVENANT (see UNDEATH).

All cultures from all over the world and from all time periods have reports of a type of vampiric demon that feeds off the sexual energy of humans (see ENERGY VAMPIRE). The incubus is generally described by its female victims as “feeling” male. At night this vampire assaults a woman while she is asleep, stealing her sexual energy from her. She seldom awakes during the attack but rather will experience the event as if it were an erotic dream.
Once an incubus has locked on to a woman (it prefers nuns), it can be very difficult to drive away, although there are many recommendations that the church offers in order to ward it off, such as performing an exorcism, relocating, repeatedly making the sign of the cross, or, as a last resort, performing an excommunication on the woman being assaulted. Traditional lore says that to hang GARLIC and a Druidstone (a stone with a natural hole through it) next to one’s bed will keep an incubus away.
Incubi can father children with their female victims; these offspring are known as CAMBIONS. There is a report of a man from Bologna, Italy, who staffed his entire brothel with incubi and the female equivalent of this vampiric creature, SUCCUBUS.
In Bao A Qou
Variations: A Bao A Qu, Á Bao A Qu, Abang Aku
In Chitor, India, an ageless being known as the In Bao A Qou lives in the very spot where the Vijay Stambh (“Tower of Victory”) was constructed in 1440 by Rana Kumbha to commerate his victory over Mahmud Khilji of Malwa.
In Bao A Qou remains invisible until someone interesting to it touches the first of the 157 narrow steps of the tower. Then, it manifests as a being made of translucent skin. As the person ascends the spiral stairs, In Bao A Qou, always staying to his right side and feeding off his courage, becomes more and more vibrant and solid (see ENERGY VAMPIRE). If an individual can reach the top of the stairs and has previously achieved nirvana, he will cast no shadow and In Bao A Qou will completely physically manifest.
If someone should make it to the top of the stairs and has not achieved nirvana or casts a shadow, In Bao A Qou will moan in horrible pain and disappear. Nevertheless, the person will still be rewarded with a view of one of the most beautiful landscapes in the world. Legend has it that only once has anyone made it all the way to the top of the stairs, although there is no report as to what, if anything, happened or who the person was.
